Local search has been a great way to get to “top listings” in the search engines. If you are in the insurance business for example (highly competitive), you will spend a lot of time and money to get ranked for “health insurance services”. This is not a highly targeted keyword either, since many would be researching using a phrase like that. More important, is to look at…
the different ways that the search term, using the sample example - could be used with a derivative term w/local. Somebody entering “health insurance services new york” or “health insurance companies manhattan new york” would allow for better positioning opportunities. However, it’s more than just placement on the organic listing for a localized search. Google and Yahoo, for example, allows companies/sites to submit to the local program, which can allow you a first page listing with a geo-map!
